The legend of Mount (Gunung) Batur

legend mount gunung batur bali island

Long time ago, there was a princess of King Galuh, her name is Dewi Naga Ningrum or sometimes also called Dewi Rondo Asih. As the succession came up in the Kingdom of King Galuh, another King’s wife named Dewi Pangrenyep has told a lie about Dewi Naga having such an affair with Patih. The lie would then resulted into punishment for Dewi Naga. The King sent her away, out of the Kingdom while she was pregnant. The King only gave Dewi Naga Ningrum two of his men, Saud and Musroh to guard her on her way.

In the middle of the way, Dewi Naga Ningrum felt that it was time to deliver the baby. So she asked Saud and Musroh to find some water. While those two men went away to find water, Dewi Naga delivered the baby alone and died after the process.

Saud and Musroh found their master, Dewi Naga Ningrum, has died as they got back from finding water. They saw a little baby has been born from the dead mother. Later on, the baby was named Jaka Mursada. The baby then was raised by Dewi Naga Ningrum’s grandfather named Kyai Nambi.

Kyai Nambi took out the baby’s placenta and buried it in a volcano mountain. But something strange has happened, the volcano mountain did not erupt by the time the placenta of Jaka Mursada buried in that mountain. The mountain is Mount (Gunung) Batur.

Cash preparation when you are traveling to Bali

Prepare some rupiah when you are traveling to Bali because it is the basic unit of money there. Foreign currency that you bring, whether you have in banknotes or traveler’s checks, should be exchanged at major banks or authorized moneychangers. Usually the exchange rates which offered by the moneychangers are better than the banks. The other advantage of money changers is that they usually stay open for longer time than the bank. In addition, transactions are taken care quicker there than that in the bank. Major banks in Indonesia have several branches in most tourist centers in Bali, especially those in major cities. In smaller towns, you will find it rather difficult to find banks. Bank in Bali open from 8 am to 2 pm from Monday to Friday. Many shops in Bali whether it is big or small accept plastic cards. So your credit card is real useful here, but remember that they will charge you with a 3% until 5 % additional charge to your bill. Some tourists say that cash advances can be obtained in all major tourist resorts like Denpasar, Kuta, Sanur and Ubud. Automatic Teller Machine are spreading all over the island, mostly off course at shopping centers and banks. All of the Automatic Teller Machine are connected to international banking networks. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted by most of the bigger businesses. The amount signed for is in rupiah and the bill is then converted to your domestic currency. To ensure security and convenience, bring most of your money in traveler’s checks, despite getting better exchange rates for cash. Backing this up with a credit card for major purchases is a good idea. US dollars are the most negotiable currency, particularly in remote areas. It would be a practical way to change as much as you can and feel safe carrying before heading into more remote regions.

Bali weather can be cold but you need to bring your sunscreen lotion

Bali weather can get rather cold at the central part of Bali Island. In Ubud for example, you might need to wear your jacket to protect you from the cold and rain. Sometimes, winter winds from Australia reach Bali during July or August bring chilly weather to Bali. From November to April, rainy season in Bali will sometimes bring flood around the island. If you are looking for a tip to travel Bali, then maybe one thing I want to remind you is don’t forget to put on sunscreen lotion on your skin because Bali Island is located near the equator. The Australians on the other hand often know what it takes to enjoy a couple of weeks on this tropical island. Some surfers look like Casper the friendly ghost when catching their ways; they use as much sunscreen lotion as possible.

Made Switra and Robert Koke's surfers board

ride wave kuta bali
Robert Koke was an American who came to Bali in 1930 and surfing the waves. Balinese young boys amazed to see him stood up on the oddly shaped board and riding it over the waves on Kuta Beach. That ancient surfboard was more like a piece of roughly shaped wood. Whenever the Japanese came to Bali on a sudden Koke left. The surfing board was found by Made Switra’s grand father who then took it home and used it as aboard for cutting fish. As we know by now that Made Switra is one of Indonesia’s best surfers.

Made Switra admitted that at first people in Bali looked on surfers as low people. But after years loving the ocean and surfing, Mad had finally managed a career out of something he loved doing. According to Made Switra, the development of Bali’s surfing industry has raised the profile of the sport in Indonesia. Balinese is no longer see it as low level sport but the elite one. People from the city are looking for surfing products to wear and that makes surfing more respectable.
